Need A New Camping Stove To Include In Your Outdoor Equipment Gear?

Posted by Vicki on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, In : REI
I remember, back in November, talking about all the “soft deep fluffy snow blanketing our mountain trails”. Well, here it is, the 26th of January, and the local mountains are almost bare. I just got back from walking the dog and realized that the grass is very green, there are fat buds on the bushes and tulips are shooting up all over the place… AND… there is next to no snow on the mountains! This isn’t actually very good since we’re hosting the Win...

Introducing The MSR Denali Evo Ascent Snowshoe – Bring On The Snow!

Posted by Vicki on Monday, November 16, 2009, In : REI

Maybe now when we are already having soft deep fluffy snow blanketing our mountain trails, we should look into buying a new set of snowshoes. Let me tell you about the MSR Denali Evo Ascent, a fantastic lightweight yet rugged snowshoe that offers extraordinary performance on icy and steep surfaces! They have strong Unideck injection-molded decks, which are tapered for a more natural walking position. They can accommodate a large boot, which makes this shoe perfect for bringing in your pack...

Check Out These Karhu XCD Guide Backcountry Mountaineering Skis

Posted by Vicki on Sunday, November 8, 2009, In : REI
With summer leaving us in such haste, all we can do now is plan ahead for a long season of snow and winter fun. Have you ever thought of upgrading your skills from cross-country skiing to the little more challenging sport of mountaineering skiing? It’s so much easier now than it used to be. The typical mountaineering ski was, up until quite recently, a big fat ski that weighed substantially more than your regular cross country ski. Not only that, you used to have to carry special skins tha...

Electric Assist Bicycle? Is A Hybrid Bike Fun?

Posted by Vicki on Sunday, May 24, 2009, In : REI
My husband and I have enjoyed camping for many years and sometimes he has brought his mountain bike with him while I have remained at camp reading a book or preparing supper. I am not especially crazy about bicycle riding, because of weak knees. I have always looked at bikes as something beyond my capability, especially seeing my sweaty husband coming back from a life “on the gravel road”. But I have to tell you about my new life as a bicyclist with my new found friend, the Urban Mover UM...

If You Only Have One Canoe This Should Be It!

Posted by Vicki on Sunday, May 10, 2009, In : REI
I was looking out the kitchen window this morning and I realize that something was amiss on top of our 4X4 camping truck. Then I realized what it was. It was empty! Usually we have our old scratched and patched fiberglass canoe on top of it. Good luck to the person who took it because that means that now we can get a new one. Without delay, I dove into REI’s Canoe Section and almost immediately, I found exactly what I would like to invest in. It is the Old Town Penobscot 16 Canoe and I am...

A Great PFD Is Essential For Great Outdoors Fun On The Water

Posted by Vicki on Friday, May 1, 2009, In : REI

Today I was reading through some promo material that I sent for last week. We have decided to do something we have never done before. We are going whitewater rafting on the Fraser River!! I know we will get a kick out of it and, after we’ve learned some useful information about how to have safe outdoors fun on the water, a river kayak is next on our wish list. But I know that first we need good PFD’s and, after looking through some ads on the web, this one looks pretty darn good to me. ...

Yippee! A Great New Rain Jacket For Some Wet Outdoors Fun

Posted by Vicki on Thursday, April 23, 2009, In : REI
So now, all is well for the 2009 outdoor hiking camping season. We did a thorough checkup of all our outdoor equipment gear and upgraded a few items that probably would have caused us some grief smack dab in the middle of a rainy and windy night, including a new tent etc. But Hey…speaking of rain - one thing that I did not pay enough attention to, was the rain jacket for me when we’re on the trail. Sure, I have the one I bought 4 years ago, but it’s starting to get tattered and ripped...

A Most Efficient Camp Stove

Posted by Vicki on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, In : REI
With summer just around the corner, I’ve been going through all our summer hiking gear and camping equipment, looking for items that might need replacing. As I came across our old camp stove, I remembered vividly the last time I used it. It’s flame was so uneven that it scorched my cook set and also the food. Yep, this poor old camp stove has certainly seen better days and is ready for retirement. After a bit of research, I discovered what I think is the perfect replacement. This ...

Choose A Great Camping Sleeping Pad

Posted by Vicki on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, In : REI
Aren’t we lucky that we have so many quality products to choose from in our lives? Today I’ve been looking at sleeping pads to add to our camping equipment and I’ve found two that really caught my eye. First was the Exped Downmat 7 made with UV- and abrasion-resistant polyester fabric. This mat has 700-fill power goose down inside to insulate you from the cold ground and the baffle chambers prevent cold spots. It's warm and very comfortable to sleep on and takes up less room than the o...

Rugged Mountain Pants for Rugged Outdoors Fun

Posted by Vicki on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, In : REI

As the sun was starting to warm up our backyard again, I realized that it was time to go through the upcoming camping and hiking seasons’ clothing supply and – there they were! Horror of horrors! - My husband’s ugly, ratty, torn army surplus pants. I rushed to the computer for help and, phew, there I found the consummate pair of mountain pants to replace those disgusting old things! Yes, these US made Mountain Khakis Original Mountain Pants are outstanding. They’re soft and comfort...

Posted by Vicki on Wednesday, February 18, 2009, In : REI

Oh, no!  I just saw my first mosquito of the season! Here it comes again – the time for that annoying whining to fill the air. The bane of our hiking and camping trips! What’s a die-hard outdoors person to do? Well, let me tell you what we’re going to do.  We’re going to get us a big old (new, really) bug tent. The tent we have in mind will be great for camping or hiking. For all of our overnight trips, this REI Bug Hut 2 Tent offers great night relief from flying insects, even th...

When You Can’t Go Outdoor Camping Or Hiking – Try A Picnic

Posted by Vicki on Friday, January 30, 2009, In : REI
For those days when you don’t have the time to go camping or hiking but need to be outdoors, a picnic in the park will do in a pinch.  In just such a situation a necessary piece of outdoor gear is a cooler and, if it comes in the form of a backpack, all the better. Imagine this – finding a quiet corner of the park, sitting under a shady tree, eating cheese and grapes with a fresh baguette, and sipping on some ice-cold white wine – ummm, exquisite!  This only works if the wine is icy ...

A Tent For Camping Families

Posted by Vicki on Wednesday, December 31, 2008, In : REI
Here is another big tent I found that would be perfect for camping families that have a couple of kids.  It’s been developed for today’s comfort loving nomads and provides a huge amount of space.  It has a mesh front room, with a full coverage rain fly, that the kids can use as a bug free play area. It would make putting up a separate bug tent unnecessary. Also, if it rains, they can still enjoy the outdoor camping experience while staying dry.  The SuperSeal Floor makes for a securel...

A Really Big Hiking Camping Tent

Posted by Vicki on Monday, December 29, 2008, In : REI

I just had a great idea.  I’ve been looking at all the different kinds of tents there are out there and had this thought that, wouldn’t it be great to have a hiking camping tent that was big enough to put Aero’s  dogs camping tent inside during the night.  Cool.  Especially if we were camping in wild places and there were bears and cougars around.  I’d feel way more secure if we were all together in the night.  What made me think of this was finding the Kelty Mantra 7 Tent.  This...

Dogs Camping And Hiking Outdoor Gear

Posted by Vicki on Sunday, December 28, 2008, In : REI

“Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful”… and I’m dreaming of a summer camping trip.  There are avalanche warnings on all of the local mountains so I’m sitting here fantasizing about all of the different summer outdoor camps we’ve enjoyed.  This year Conny and I will be treating Aero to her very own dogs tent.  We have found the perfect one.  It has a detachable floor for easy cleaning and a clear side window so she can see out.  It is freestanding a...

One Of The Best Camping Lanterns Ever

Posted by Vicki on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, In : REI

Oh, to be a capable outdoorsy woman. Even better, an outdoorsy woman with access to so many time and energy saving options! Forget about having to rely on a big strong man to carry around everything. I remember the first time I packed the truck up with all our gear for camping and equipment for boating for a fortnight camping trip. I was amazed that I did it! All by my lonesome! At that moment I realized that the door of backpacking, hiking and camping no longer needed to be opened for me bec...

A Dog Bed To Take Tent Hiking And Camping

Posted by Vicki on Monday, December 8, 2008, In : REI

Nothing beats sleeping in the outback… except when a big, heavy dog is squishing you off your bed! Luckily, Conny and I have found the perfect solution to Aero’s reluctance about  sleeping on her own bed while we’re backpacking camping. It’s the Adventure Dog Dream Bed found at REI that will let her feel like she’s still on our comfy bed but will give us all the room we need to enjoy sweet outdoor dreams!  This wonderful bed has an inflatable insert that gives it a truly people-bed ...

A Top Notch REI Dog Backpack

Posted by Vicki on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, In : REI

I think it’s finally time for me to listen to the experts.  I was just reading Cesar (the dog whisperer) Millan’s latest book and he strongly reiterates his recommendation to use a backpack for a dog that is not getting enough exercise. I have to admit that we’ve been falling down on the job lately due to tack of time.  I know it’s hard for our dog, Aero, to get only a short walk in the morning and be stuck in the house all day while we’re at work.  I’ve been looking at different ...

Have you ever been camping in the early spring or late fall and, after a few days, were just itching to get clean without freezing to death?  I found a really cool piece of camping equipment that might just become one of my favourite things to bring cold-weather camping.  It’s called “Hot Water on Demand” and it’s from Coleman.  Everyone knows what great quality products Coleman offers.  It’s compact and portable and it delivers hot water in 5 seconds!  Can’t you just imagine gett...

Another Great REI Tent

Posted by Vicki on Thursday, November 27, 2008, In : REI

The Big Agnes is another great REI tent.  I think it's just about the perfect 4 person tent.  It's got two doors for easy access and the front door has a welcome mat attached. It is very roomy and, unless you're over 6 feet tall, you can stand up in it.  It also has a large poly-vinyl skylight so you can stargaze when you go to bed (very romantic).
Even though we are "tentally challenged", we still found Agnes fairly easy to put up. The only future problem might be the thin floor, since we som...
