As our crazy weather patterns are stabilizing and avalanche risks are on the decline, backcountry snowshoe trips in the friendlier weather are again becoming more attractive. However, before heading out once more on your old torn and worn snowshoes, you might want to take a few minutes to check out these fantastic new snowshoes! They are a one-piece snow-repellent Profax polypropylene snowshoe and they provide good flotation. As you can see, these are the not the traditional frame-and-decking snowshoes of yore. Steel crampons have three rear teeth for braking control, which is important in the spring, when the upper layer of thawing snow gets icy during the cold nights. When you are climbing, four front teeth provide a good bite. If you are like me, a “back snow thrower”, the True Hinge Rotation design helps you keep control of your snowshoe as you walk. Because of this rotation design, you’ll find that you won’t be accidentally flipping the shoe up to hit the front of your leg. Nor will you be throwing snow up in the air behind you, which is especially annoying if you happen to bring a dog with you (as I do most of the time). These MSR Denali Classic Snowshoes are not bulky and the bindings are simple and can be adjusted even with gloves on. They are made for hikers weighing around 125 pounds. Over that, depending on your weight (125-275 lbs) or if you just want better flotation, you need to add either the 4inch or 8inch tails, which are sold separately. Happy snowshoeing!
